A Brave team of Hampshire men have been in training for one of the toughest bike races on the planet to raise money for The Children's Trust.

The team of four riders and ten support team plan to complete the 3,000 mile Race Across America (RAAM) in June.

The riders will take it in turns, travelling non-stop from the West Coast to the East Coast of the states, climbing the Rocky Mountains, powering across desert flats and eventually overlooking the Atlantic.

Adrian Colyer, 41, initiated the challenge to raise money for the Trust, a cause close to his heart.

The father-of-two explains: "My family has a close connection to The Children's Trust, as my 5-year-old niece, Bethany spent 6 months at its brain injury rehabilitation centre following a brain stem stroke.

"A number of the team visited the Trust recently to meet some of the children and staff and we drew a lot of motivation to help keep us going on the long cold winter training rides."

Raam Fireflies teamSpeaking of the ride he said: "I love to race bikes so when the opportunity to compete in RAAM came along I jumped at the chance. I'm the oldest rider in the team by over a decade! But we're all excited."

The team, going under the name RAAM Fireflies includes seven Hampshire firefighters.

Rob Dellow, 42, a firefighter based in Portsmouth, will lead the support crew who will drive alongside the riders.

He described it as a "once in a lifetime adventure" and said he is committed to ensuring the whole team is competitive and professional, adding: "We will also make sure we raise the profile of The Children's Trust – a truly commendable charity!

"As Crew Chief, it is my role to organise, motivate, encourage, shout at and occasionally cuddle the rest of the team, ensuring that we complete the race to the best of our ability and are still able to enjoy a pint or two with each other at the end."

As part of their fundraising efforts the team are hosting a charity ball on March 9 at Winchester Hotel, Winchester. Click here to buy tickets or for more information call Jo Emery on 07824552402. To sponsor the team visit: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/raamfireflies
