Emojis are a popular way to communicate emotions, feelings or activities digitally. Now Apple and Android have launched emojis including a man and a woman in a wheelchair, a prosthetic arm and leg, among other symbols representing people with disabilities.
Apple’s new character designs, proposed to the Unicode Consortium last year, were revealed today on World Emoji Day. The new emojis should be available for public use in Autumn.
An Apple spokesman said: "Celebrating diversity in all its many forms is integral to Apple's values.
"These new options help fill a significant gap in the emoji keyboard."
The emojis don’t yet represent all disabilities but Apple consider this a starting point, paving the way for better representation and more disability emojis in the future.
