‘Family life today: where's the risk?’, the theme for Child Safety Week 2019, focuses on dangers from our modern lifestyles and tells families about simple solutions to keep children safe.

Child Safety Week, taking place from 3-9 June, is run by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) which explains ‘new dangers’ in everyday family life including:

  • button batteries that can kill when swallowed;
  • washing capsules that can poison; and
  • nappy sacks stored under cot mattresses that can suffocate babies.

Outside of the home CAPT identifies risks including:

  • distraction from devices when driving or walking near busy roads;
  • the coffee culture trend that sees young children at risk from hot drink scalds in busy coffee shops; and
  • the loss of pedestrian education for children and families.

A Parents' Pack is available to help parents identify the key risks of accident and help prevent them. This includes activity sheets to do with children.

CAPT also has a youtube channel with tips as well as a poster and information.

Last week CAPT featured in a newspaper article showing how the NHS in Scotland spends in the region of £40 million every year treating children who are injured in accidents – but that simple steps can be taken to avoid accident risks to children.
