The Superhero Tri 2019 that took place on the 18 August at Windsor’s Dorney Lake is being televised tomorrow, Saturday 31 August, at 10:20am on Channel 4, presented by Clare Balding. The Children’s Trust's very own super team took part including Jake, aged 16, who was left with an acquired brain injury after having a brain tumour removed, Ambassador Joely Richardson and Dalton Leong, chief executive of The Children’s Trust.
The Superhero Tri is a disability sports challenge championing inclusivity in sport. The fun challenge can be completed solo, with family or friends or in team relays. The Superhero Tri was set up by Sophia Warner – a Paralympian with cerebral palsy and Ambassador for The Children’s Trust – who was the first disabled person to enter the London Triathlon. Sophia struggled with some elements of the Triathlon so she set up the Superhero series to encourage people with disabilities to take part in fun sporting challenges at their own pace, in their own way.
Jake, The Children’s Trust's Superhero Tri team captain, arrived at The Children’s Trust in May 2019 for three months of intensive rehabilitation following an operation to remove a brain tumour. When he woke up from the operation he couldn’t talk or walk and was being fed through a tube.
Jake’s Mum comments: “From the get go, I noticed Jake’s mood improve. He’s making brilliant progress.” Jake is talking again and has a walking frame to help him build on the steps he has already taken. He is still quite reliant on his wheelchair to get around. “His ultimate goal is to play for Arsenal. With Jake’s dedication, there’s no doubt that he will succeed.”
