We’re pleased to have been shortlisted for the Innovation Award by the National Association of Special Schools (NASS) for our work in Sensory Careers Project.

In January 2023, the Department for Education (DfE) released new career guidance, aligning with the Gatsby Benchmarks. This guidance emphasises the importance of high-quality encounters for students, providing them with the experiences and information needed to make informed decisions.

Our Sensory Careers Project encompasses the DfE's vision, creating high-quality, meaningful encounters for students with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). This project allows students to engage with, experience, and play active roles by focusing on accessible and age-appropriate methods. The initiative empowers students to develop real-world skills while respecting their unique needs and abilities.

Launa Randles, Headteacher at The Children’s Trust School, says:

We are incredibly proud to have reached the finals of the NASS Awards. Our ongoing commitment is to provide students with the best opportunities, including valuable experiences in the working world.

Launa continues: "Some may wonder why we focus on work experience and enterprise, but it helps ensure all our young people meaningfully understand roles like those in hairdressing, preparing them for real-world success.”

Staff at The Children's Trust School advocate and implement a meaningful, age-respectful curriculum; for example, older learners use real archaeological resources to learn about fossils, ensuring dignity in learning through thoughtful language and resources (Challenge Partners 2024).

This has not only enriched the students' learning experiences but has also generated a sustainable income - so far totalling an impressive £4,283.42.

We look forward to celebrating 25 years of the NASS awards in October and seeing all the award entries for Breaking Barriers, Innovation, and Outstanding Impact.
