Early years curriculum

At The Children's Trust School, our early years learners embark on a journey of discovery and growth. In our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we provide a nurturing environment where children engage in child-initiated learning, guided by the Developmental Early Years Outcomes (DEYO).

Our goal is to empower each child, including those with additional needs, to reach their full potential and foster a lifelong love of learning.

Nursery placement

Upon arrival in our EYFS Nursery, children experience a child-initiated learning approach that encourages their interests, curiosity and developing independence. Through DEYO, our dedicated staff supports their individual learning journeys, fostering a sense of exploration and self-discovery.

DEYO allows us to set specific and measurable outcomes that are tailored to the individual needs of each child. By differentiating the outcomes, we can provide targeted support and interventions to address their specific areas of development. This approach ensures that children with SEND (Special educational needs and disability) make progress and achieve their full potential, building a strong foundation for future learning.

For the nursery children, we liaise with external community professionals including nurses and therapists. If children have specialist equipment needs, we work with community therapists to set up a safe and comfortable learning environment.

Reception placement

In our EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) Reception, children are baselined against the ImPACTS curriculum (Individualised, (meaningful), Profile, Assessment, Curriculum, Target, Setting). This comprehensive assessment allows us to understand each child's starting point and tailor our teaching to their specific needs.

Throughout the early years, we focus on vital areas of learning for children with SEND, including communication and language development, social and emotional skills and physical development. We provide a specialised sensory approach, adaptations and assistive technologies to support their individual needs.

Our dedicated, skilled team of professionals are trained in inclusive practices to ensure that children have equal access to learning opportunities across education, health, therapy and care.

Through a combination of play, exploration and active participation, we create an environment that supports the unique needs of our children. We believe in celebrating their strengths, fostering their independence and promoting their overall well-being.

For a comprehensive understanding of our Early Years curriculum (DEYO), including its intent, implementation and impact for children with SEND, we invite you to refer to The Children's Trust guidance and our Early Years policy. These resources provide valuable information about our inclusive approach to early childhood education, ensuring that all children, including those with SEND, receive the necessary support and opportunities to thrive in their educational journey.
